A POODLE COMES OF AGE COLUMBO, A 13-YEAR-OLD DOG, CELEBRATES HIS `BARK MITZVAH' BY CARLI TEPROFF cteproff@herald.com Donning a gold yarmulke and a prayer shawl, 13-year-old Columbo Rudy on Monday marked his entry into the world as an adult. With several of his canine pals present, the toy poodle partied the day away at an outdoor Aventura cafe with a rousing rendition of ''Happy Bark Mitzvah'' and a sampling of doggie bones. There was even a certificate congratulating Columbo, signed by Rabbi Rex Doberman of Congregation Beth Poodle. ''He's Jewish,'' said owner Edie Rudy, who explained that because both of his parents are Jewish, Columbo is, too. ``This is a very important event in his life.'' For guests Howard and Giselle Stein, it was their first dog party. ''At first we were surprised by the idea,'' Howard said. ``Who in the world ever heard of a bark mitzvah?'' As unorthodox as it might seem, ''bark mitzvahs'' are the newest in the trend of treating a pet like a beloved son or daughter. Already pets are pampered at the doggie day spa or given treats from a gourmet dog bakery. ''The bark mitzvah theme is pretty popular because people want something different,'' said Christine Ciarmello, the owner of New York-based Cleo's Bakery, who noted she has done four since she opened two years ago. She offers her clients invitations, party favors and even an all-meat cake. ``It's an excuse for a party.'' For Edie and Ed Rudy, the $500 party was a way to show their love for their dog. ''He is like a child,'' said Edie, whose children are all grown up. ``With so much going on in the world it's nice to come together and celebrate something positive.'' But, the bark mitzvah is certainly not a hit with everyone. Rabbi Terry Bookman, of Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, said he is all for loving and caring for pets, but a ''bark mitzvah'' is crossing the line. ''We recognize that people love their pets,'' said Bookman, adding that the reform congregation has held blessings for pets. ``But a bark mitzvah is a desecration of a sacred event.'' Rabbi Ed Farber of Beth Torah, a conservative congregation in Northeast Miami-Dade County, had even stronger words: ``It is just distasteful.'' Traditionally, a bar mitzvah celebrates the coming of age of a Jewish boy. During the service, the boy is called up to the pulpit and asked to read from the Torah, thus transforming him into a man. Farber pointed out that before a boy can be eligible for a bar mitzvah, he must have a bris -- the circumcision that traditionally takes place eight days after his birth. ''Did the dog have a bris?'' Farber asked. Rabbi Bookman compared it to a Catholic person feeding a wafer to a pet. ''It's like having a Communion for a dog and calling it a barkunion,'' he said. But Rabbi Gary Glickstein of Temple Beth Sholom, a reform synagogue in Miami Beach, appreciates the different ways people find to express their Judaism. ''One of the things Judaism has struggled with is how to integrate the modern phenomenon we find around us into the Jewish tradition, which has ancient roots,'' Glickstein said. ``It is easy to make fun of something here. But I think there is a motivation here that is positive in some way.'' But for Columbo and his pals, the Columbus Day event was a chance to romp around while their humans toasted the occasion with champagne and a bark mitzvah cake -- which the humans ''accidentally'' dropped pieces of for the pups. And yes, the dogs even got to go home with real ''doggie'' bags. ''Dogs bring us so much joy,'' added proud mom Edie Rudy. ``Why not celebrate them.''
